About
TODAY is a 1962 Avro Richardson 36 Phantom Express Cruiser. She is a classic and classy cruiser with the beauty of an old wooden boat but with a carvel-planked aluminum hull built by Avro Aircraft Canada so it is a worry-free hull and also a touch of Canadian history.
In the 1960s the Avro Company, located in the Toronto area, made approximately 150 hulls in 4 models of various lengths and shipped them to Richardson Boat Works in Tonawanda, NY to have the custom-built superstructures completed in wood (mainly mahogany). The carvel-planked hulls were constructed of aircraft aluminum frames and 1/8" aluminum planks with the result being amazingly strong and light.
TODAY is an excellent example of that collaboration. She is a well maintained, gas powered cruiser that is both comfortable and economical to operate. The owners have complete records of all work done and maintenance performed while they have owned this vessel as well as all equipment manuals.
The owners have meticulously rebuilt her over the last 22 years since they purchased her and she is truly amazing. TODAY was repowered in 2016 with twin Chrysler Fury 318 engines that have only 25 hours on them since their rebuild in 2002. She has been completely rewired and replumbed to meet current ABYC standards. She does have a 2018 Insurance Survey where she absolutely shone and the surveyor was extremely impressed with her condition.
